How to Check a Baby Product Is Genuine and Safe Before You Buy

Simple checks for parents buying baby products online: what to look at on the listing, the packaging and the seller, and what to do if something seems wrong.

When the product is for your baby, it is worth taking a few extra minutes before you buy. These checks work for any online shop.

On the listing

  • Real photos from several angles, not just one polished picture.
  • A clear description: materials, dimensions, age range, what is in the box.
  • A price that makes sense. A big brand at a tiny price is a warning sign.
  • Safety information, such as the age recommendation, and “BPA-free” where it matters (bottles, feeding items).

About the seller

  • Clear contact details, and a way to reach a real person.
  • Written shipping and returns policies. See ours: shipping and returns.
  • A fair claims process if something arrives damaged or wrong.

When it arrives

  1. Open the parcel on camera if you can. A short unboxing video is useful proof if something is wrong.
  2. Check the packaging: printing should be sharp, spelling correct and labels complete.
  3. Look for the maker’s name, age range, materials and care instructions on the product or box.
  4. Smell and feel the product. A strong chemical smell, rough edges or loose parts are red flags.
  5. Wash or sterilise items that touch your baby’s skin or mouth before first use, following the instructions.

If something seems wrong

Stop using the product, keep the packaging, take clear photos and contact the seller straight away. With Shoishop, send your order number and photos through our Report a problem page and we will look into it.
