It is easy to overbuy before a baby arrives. Babies need less than the shops suggest, and they outgrow things fast. Here are the essentials, and what you can leave until later.

Clothes

  • Six to eight bodysuits or onesies and a few sleepsuits.
  • Two or three soft caps, socks and mittens.
  • A couple of swaddle blankets.
  • Buy mostly newborn and 0–3 month sizes: see our size guide.

Feeding

  • Burp cloths and bibs.
  • If you will bottle-feed or express: three or four bottles and a bottle brush. See how to choose a bottle.
  • Nursing bras, pads and a comfortable chair if you are breastfeeding.

Diapering

  • Newborn diapers and the next size up. Read the diaper size guide.
  • Wipes, a gentle barrier cream and a changing mat.
  • A small bin with a lid.

Sleeping

  • A cot or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly.
  • Two or three fitted sheets.
  • Keep the sleep space clear of pillows, loose blankets and soft toys.

Bathing and care

  • A baby bath or basin, soft towels and washcloths.
  • Mild baby wash.
  • A digital thermometer and baby nail clippers or file.

Going out

What can wait

Toys, shoes, large numbers of outfits in one size and anything that depends on your baby’s age, such as a high chair, can wait. You will know much better what you need once your baby is here.
